Festival de la Arepa de Huevo

June 1, 2023 @ 8:00 am July 31, 2026 @ 5:00 pm

Luruaco, Atlántico Department | June-July (dates vary annually)

There’s something almost spiritual about watching a master arequera slide a raw egg into a pocket of fried dough, then plunge the whole thing back into bubbling oil. The result? A golden, crispy sphere that cracks open to reveal a perfectly cooked egg nestled in warm, soft masa. This is arepa de huevo — and in the small town of Luruaco, it’s nothing short of religion.

Practical Information:
The Festival de la Arepa de Huevo typically takes place over a weekend in late June or early July. The exact dates are announced annually by local authorities, usually two to three months in advance. The town of Luruaco sits approximately 70 kilometers south of Barranquilla and 110 kilometers from Cartagena, making it an easy day trip from either city. Most travelers arrive via the main highway connecting these two coastal metropolises—the same route that leads to the famous Totumo Mud Volcano.

What to Expect:
I’ve attended this festival three times now, and each visit has been a revelation. The main plaza transforms into an open-air kitchen where dozens of vendors compete for the coveted title of best arepa de huevo. Judges evaluate entries on crispiness, egg consistency, seasoning, and that ineffable quality the locals call “sazón” — roughly translated as soul.

But this isn’t just a cooking competition. Live vallenato and cumbia bands perform on makeshift stages. Children run through clouds of fried-food smoke. Elderly women in floral aprons share recipes that have been passed down through five generations. There’s a beauty pageant, of course — because this is Colombia, and there’s always a beauty pageant — featuring the “Reina de la Arepa de Huevo.”

Culinary Deep Dive:
The arepa de huevo traces its origins to the indigenous and African communities that shaped Colombia’s Caribbean coast. Unlike the white corn arepas of Bogotá or the cheese-stuffed versions from Antioquia, this coastal specialty demands a specific technique: the arepa is first fried until partially cooked, then carefully opened to insert a raw egg, sealed, and returned to the oil. The timing must be precise. Too early, and the egg runs. Too late, and you’ve got rubber.

During the festival, you’ll encounter variations that would scandalize purists: arepas stuffed with ground beef, shrimp, or even lobster. Prices range from 3,000 to 15,000 Colombian pesos, depending on the filling and the vendor’s reputation.

Insider Tips:
Arrive before 10 AM to beat the heat and the crowds. Bring cash — card readers are rare here. Wear clothes you don’t mind getting splattered with oil. And for heaven’s sake, don’t fill up on the first arepa you see. The best vendors are often tucked into side streets, away from the main plaza.

Many travelers combine this festival with a morning visit to the Totumo Mud Volcano, located just 30 minutes north. The combination of floating in mineral-rich mud and devouring fried egg pastries may sound excessive, but I promise you: it’s the most Colombian day you’ll ever have.

Getting There:
Buses depart regularly from Barranquilla’s Terminal Metropolitano (approximately 8,000 COP, 90 minutes) and from Cartagena’s Terminal de Transportes (approximately 15,000 COP, 2 hours). Taxis and private drivers can be negotiated for around 150,000-200,000 COP round trip from either city. If you’re driving, there’s informal parking throughout town — expect to pay a few thousand pesos to a local “cuidandero” who will watch your vehicle.
